Crash

Last Sunday, while my son and I were riding in Golden Gate Park, we were rear ended by a car. The driver stopped, we have a police report, and our son was released from the ER that night. I have a shattered leg and will be hospitalized for some time. As much as I wish I could keep writing and riding, I’m going to have to take a break from both for a while. I hope to catch up in due time.

Oh no! Get better soon! And talk to a lawyer too.

I am so sorry to hear that! I too hope you a speedy and smooth recovery. And thank God your son is safe!

I’ve been saving up for a longtail, and my wife’s constant concern is for the safety of the kids in traffic.

So sorry to hear the news. You have my best wishes and I hope you recover well.

  6. terrible terrible – and hope you are not too shaken up and put off by this experience.

  7. Wow, WTF. Heal up quick! I look forward to the recap once you have 🙂

  8. I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you and your son are ok. I’ve been following your experiences because I am planning to get a Bullitt and Splendid suggested your blog. It is probably too soon to ask you how this may affect your feelings about riding. But if you return to your blog down the road it would be an interesting topic to address.

  9. Oh no! This is terrible news. I am so sorry and I hope a speedy recovery for both you and your son.

I am so sorry to hear this – best wishes and prayers for a smooth recovery. In time, I will be very interested in hearing your perspective on this with regards to continuing riding. You expereinced the (almost) worst of all of our silent fears. I am thankful your son is OK and that this is recoverable for you.

  11. Oh NO!! How awful! It seems so unfair that this should happen to you of all people – you’ve been such an inspiration to so many, including me (who’d already been biking in San Francisco since 1993, but found new excitement and challenge as a biking mom). Thank goodness your son is okay, but it sounds like you’ve had a very bad fracture. Ugh!! I’ll be thinking of you, sending you healing thoughts…and looking forward to your reflections on this once you’ve had some time to mend.

Very sorry to hear this. Wishing the best for you and your family as you recover.

  13. Oh, how horrible! I hope you are able to recover quickly and completely! I will be thinking of you and your family…sending you healing thoughts!!

  14. Dorie! So sorry to hear you’re dealing with this. Joel and I are sending all the healing wishes we can. We know you have some challenges ahead but are confident you’ll conquer them with gusto! Rest, heal well.

  15. Zan

That’s horrible! . I’m glad your son seems to be ok and I hope you heal very soon and completely . I’ll be sending you healing thoughts.

Ugh, no words–my wife and I are sick for you. Thank you for all of your inspiration thus far. We know you will be back at it in time. Hang in there.

  17. So sorry to hear this. Hope you are able to recover fully and soon.

De-lurking to wish you and your son a speedy recovery! That’s my worst nightmare: a driver behind me who’s not paying attention while riding with my sons. Sending positive thoughts your way from Walnut Creek.

  19. Susan

So glad that you are alive! I hope you heal well and quickly. IF you feel up to it, I know that I would love to hear about the outcome of all of this.

  20. Matt

    Dorie,
So sorry to hear of the accident and hope you are recovering well. Take care of yourself.

  21. Such bad news. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Keep your spirits up.

  22. Meika

I’ve been following you on Twitter… I’ll delurk to say that I’m so very sorry about your crash. Also, having just started out riding with my kids, very sobering. Cars are dangerous; bikes are vulnerable. Ugh. Get well soon!

  23. best wishes for a speedy recovery. I’ve been hit twice by cars, but I don’t mind that nearly as much as the close calls I’ve had with kids on board.

  24. Whitney

    Dorie,

I heard about your accident from my friend Angela, whose daughter goes to your son’s school. I am SOOOO sorry. 😦 How incredibly scary. And, now you have a recovery that I imagine will be quite challenging. I’m sending healing thoughts into the universe. And, gratitude that your son is safe.

    Thanks,
    Whitney

  25. De-lurking here as well- so incredibly sorry to hear this, thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. Your blog has inspired me and educated me, wish I could help you in return-

  26. Also de-lurking to send powerful beams of positive healing energy towards you and your family as you recover. Your blog has been very inspirational to this less full-on bike-riding family on the east bay, and we wish for you patience and good cheer and more patience through your entire (and perhaps, from your description of the injury, very long and painful) recovery process.

  27. Awe, what an awful experience. Grateful you and your son are on the way to recovery. I have enjoyed your blog so, so much as I work toward getting my family biking. Your post are so informative. I loved your run down of the different type of electrical assists out there. I purchased a front hub motor for my Madsen and it has made my impossible hill possible.

  28. RD Frazier

So sorry about your accident. Thank God your son was not seriously injured. Would like to get the details on the accident once you are feeling well enough to write about it. Wishing you a speedy from Walnut Creek.

  29. Lamaia Coleman

I’ve only been reading your blog for a week, but it’s been really inspirational. I’m so sorry about the accident. I pray that you and your family will find your way through this and come out of it stronger than before.

  30. Let me join in to say that I am so sorry to hear about the accident. Wishing you lots of healing. So glad to hear that your son is OK. Good luck with the upcoming weeks and months. Pulling for you here on the East Coast….

  31. Irene

  32. So sorry to hear about your injuries! I was following the story on Twitter. Being stuck in the hospital blows.

As always, your blog is a huge inspiration for me. Not just the amazing cargo biking, but the great strides you make in reducing waste. I’m definitely way more conscious of how I’m using materials.

  33. Timm

Saw this happened through Facebook! GET WELL SOON!

  34. Tom Fuller

Godspeed to you and your son.

  35. Also de-lurking to say get well soon, and that you have been a huge inspiration to me. Lots of love from Phoenix!

  36. Geoff

Oh my, so so sorry to hear this happened to you both. Your blog has been a huge inspiration to me and has been instrumental in us getting a cargo bike — you met us on the red Bullitt at Sunday Streets a few weeks ago. I hope you are able to recover both physically and emotionally as quickly as possible.

  37. Mom on a bike

Hi, I just found this blog–actually my husband found this while he was hunting around for Bobike info. I know a couple months have passed, but can you please write up whatever horrific details you want to provide and submit to Streetsblog? Especially any details you’re allowed to provide about the legal status of your case versus the driver. If you’re not familiar, it’s sf.streetsblog.org. We readers are always on the alert for car vs. bike incidents around the city and yours (as far as I know) never made it onto the radar of such blogs as that one.

About me and my family: I’m a mom who cycles with both my little ones on an Xtracycle Radish and sometimes my Bianchi with CoPilot seat if I have just the younger one in tow. Hubby finally got his new Surly Ogre (with a rack for kid seat of course) after his other bike got run over by a Muni trolley bus on Market. Amazingly he came out of that relatively unscathed, but that actually was the second vehicle vs bike collision he’d had in recent years. The first one, when our 1st kid was a tiny baby, resulted in a shattered bone in the foot, reconstructive surgery, and 16 weeks on crutches. Needless to say, we feel your pain.

I so hope you are healing up well now. I can’t believe this happened to you in GG Park of all places, nor can I even fathom something like this happening to me with two little ones in my charge. Shudder.

I hope you have totally recovered and this crash with a car is just a bad memory now.
